Often, people looking for piano lessons, whether for themselves or their kids, think about finding a music teacher with education and experience. These are good to look for, but what makes a music teacher with these things stand out?
Listening is one of the top skills to look for in a piano instructor. Even though we think of teachers as doing a lot of explaining and demonstrating while the student quietly listens, the reality is that good teaching is a conversation.
It is not good enough to be able to show a student how a piece should be played. A teacher who listens will understand why the student is struggling and be able to address their specific needs. Rather than seeing the music student as someone who needs to be taught, the listening teacher sees them as someone who needs to be understood.
